Mani Dieseruvwe and Joe Grey were on fire as Pools defeated Dorking Wanderers to complete the season in 12th.
Kevin Phillips sent out an unchanged XI against the already-relegated Wanderers, who were saying goodbye to the National League after two seasons.
Pools went behind in the seventh minute to a well-taken Charlie Carter finish.
There had been a moment of uncertainty in the away defence just seconds earlier and when Dorking moved the ball nicely in and around the box it set up Carter, who tucked his shot into Pete Jameson's bottom right corner.
However, the game turned with two goals in two breathless minutes.
First, Pools moved forward on 11 minutes through Tom Crawford and Terrell Agyemang, who found Dieseruvwe on the left side of the box. The forward took aim and found Harrison Male’s top-left corner.
Barely had the celebrations subsided that it was 2-1 just 60 seconds later.
Wanderers lost the ball, allowing Joe Grey to drive into the box, where his low cross was turned into his own net by Barry Fuller.
It was almost 2-2 on the half-hour after Josh Taylor’s long throw was flicked on for Alfie Rutherford to tuck home but the assistant's offside flag went up immediately.
Pools returned to the attack and Grey saw a shot blocked from a narrow angle, and seconds later a David Ferguson thunderbolt flashed just wide.
But the visitors went further ahead on 43 minutes, with an action replay goal from Dieseruvwe.
It came following a swift counter-attack led by Grey after Crawford had made an important block deep in his own half from Callum Kennedy’s shot. Dieseruvwe's curling strike saw his 25th goal of the campaign.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, Pools had another opportunity but Callum Cooke was high with a free-kick on the edge of the area.
Dorking pulled one back in the 51st minute after super skill and footwork by Jimmy Muitt.
The right-sided player danced his way past four away players and placed his left-footed shot expertly into Jameson's bottom-left corner.
But Pools responded with another cracker on 59 minutes.
Crawford was the chief instigator, taking Pools forward and trying to find Dieseruvwe. That didn't come off but Pools kept the ball and Grey let fly with a stunning half-volley which went in via the crossbar.
Grey looked in again in the 67th minute, only for Muitt to get back and execute a brilliant goal-saving tackle.
Muitt went from goal-saver to goal-scorer in the 77th minute. He combined nicely with Rutherford and got the ball back to score this time with his right foot.
Dorking had their tails up and it needed a magnificent last-ditch goal-line clearance from Luke Waterfall to thwart Wanderers eight minutes from time.
The pressure continued and Jameson made an excellent save from a goal-bound Rutherford header.
Early in stoppage time, Male made a marvellous diving save to his left to keep out a Grey shot which seemed destined for his top corner.
Dorking threw everything at Pools with Jameson and the woodwork coming to their rescue deep in added time. Pools survived and finished the season on a winning note and in 12th position.
